Dr. Carla Coffin

Dr. Coffin is Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Calgary Liver Unit. She received MSc / MD at Memorial University under the supervision of Professor T.I Michalak using the woodchuck hepatitis virus model of hepatitis B.  She  completed Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Calgary, and American Association for the Study of Liver Disease Advanced Hepatology Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco with Professor N.A Terrault.  Dr. Coffin was a recipient of a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator Award (2012-2017). In 2015, she served on the World Health Advisory board for essential medicines (HCV and HBV). 

Dr. Coffin’s research has been supported by CIHR, junior faculty awards from AASLD (Mentor, Professor S.S. Lee), the American Gastroenterology Association (Mentor, Professor M.G Swain), as well as infrastructure grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Alberta Advanced Education Technology.  In 2018, she was appointed chair of the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Disease (CASL) Education committee. She co-chaired the 2018 CASL guidelines panel for Management of Hepatitis B and was integral to establishing the Canadian HBV Research Network (CanHepB), to facilitate national multi-site research studies on hepatitis B.
